Oakura Strawflowers Bouquet
Oakura Strawflowers is inspired by a bouquet of strawflowers I purchased from our local florist here in Oakura which I then hung to dry in my closet. Strawflowers, which are native to Australia, retain much of their colour after drying and they were the perfect inspiration for me to paint during the winter months when fresh flowers were much harder to come by. I love how different each of them are, their long hardy stems and the myriad of colours you can get. I also discovered that their petals aren’t actually petals but modified leaves called ‘bracts’! I really enjoyed painting each of these delicate leaves and adding several layers to help bring out the density of colour, to me they shout ‘joyful’!
