The Bluest Iris
The Bluest Iris is my latest painting completed just a couple of months ago and was shown at The Percy Thomson Gallery in Stratford as part of an exhibition for the Taranaki Arts Trail. Like most of the flowers I am inspired to paint, these iris are tall and elegant. There is a quiet sophistication about these Iris. I especially love to capture the delicate frilly edges of their petals and try to keep my watercolour washes as light and transparent as possible, adding just the smallest amount of pigment in the darker shadows and creases. Blue was not a colour I had used before in my painting but I fell in love with this hue and with the complimentary colours of yellow and green, the petals of the iris are able to really stand out against the creamy tone of the watercolour paper.
